Television, Video and Film Education and Training

With a bachelors degree you will take classes where you gain skills in film-making, directing, and producing, lighting and sound technology, film editing, screen writing, cinematography, acting, and production design. You will likely specialize in one area where you then get to build your portfolio.

With a master degree in motion pictures and television you will develop these skills further and also you may be required to write your thesis. At all three levels of study you will likely be required to complete internship requirements give the hands-on, practical nature of the programs.

Film and TV courses may also include camera operations, photography, lighting, computer animation, online animation and gaming, costume design, stage design, and film editing. Information and computer technology skills are also important in these careers especially in areas such as editing and sound technology.

Television, Video and Film Careers

The motion picture and video industry is very broad. You can choose from many areas of specialization with an online film degree, including acting, producing, directing, cinematographers, camera operation, editing, animation, etc.

Jobs in the industry are classified into three phases of filmmaking:

  • Pre-production: The film-making planning phase, that includes budgeting, casting, locating the setting(s), set and costume design and construction, and scheduling.
  • Production: The actual making of the film. In this phase, the number of people involved in the production phase varies depending on the size and type of project, and the size of the budget.
  • Post-production: The film-making activities which occurs in editing rooms and recording studios. This is where the film is shaped into its final form.

Other careers with an online film degree are:

  • Visual illustrators, animators, and multimedia artists
  • Screen writers
  • Scenic designers, set decorators, and model makers
  • Carpenters, painters, electricians
  • Costume designers, and makeup and hairstyling artists
  • Animal trainers and handlers
  • Sound engineering technicians, film recordists and editors, and boom operators
  • Sound effects editors or audio recording engineers

Expected Income and Projected Career Growth

The United States Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates the annual income to be about $71,000 in film and motion picture industry, while radio and television broadcasting personnel earn about $48,000 a year. Actors' incomes vary greatly but top movie stars and TV actors can earn in the millions per project with an online film degree.
