A high school diploma is the minimum qualification to become a correctional officer, in addition to further corrections training for positions in supervision and administration.

The United States Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports that in order to be a correctional officer, employees need to have at least a bachelor's degree in criminal justice or corrections. Federal, state, and local corrections departments also provide training, which is based on American Correctional Association and the American Jail Association guidelines. The median annual income for first-line supervisors/managers of correctional officers was $57,380. The middle 50% earned between $41,740 and $73,630. The lowest 10% earned below $32,300, and the highest 10% earned over $86,970.

The median annual income for bailiffs was $37,820. The middle 50% earned between $26,730 and $51,470. The lowest 10% earned below $18,750, and the highest 10% earned over $61,500.

The BLS reports that for people with campus and online corrections training, employment of correctional officers is expected to grow 9% between 2008 and 2018. Those working in federal corrections institutions earn the highest income.
