Professional degrees prepare the degree holder for a particular profession by emphasizing competency skills as well as the guiding analysis and theory. Professionals are generally licensed or otherwise regulated by a governmental or government-approved agency or body. A professional degree therefore prepares students for practical aspects of their careers. Professional areas include nursing, veterinary medicine, engineering, medicine and law, architecture, forestry, law, medicine, chiropractic, engineering, dentistry, psychology, accounting, physical therapy, pharmacy, social work, religious ministry, education, etc. Professional degrees often completed as a second degree after an undergraduate degree in an academic subject. In the United States, many professional degrees are combined with graduate degree programs. Some students choose to complete their professional studies after graduate studies (MS or PhD). In the United Kingdom, the study of vocational subjects at undergraduate level, and post-graduate qualifications outside the academic degree structure, also play an important role in one’s professional training. Usually, there are some requirements that must be completed. In many cases, graduates must complete required professional courses and pass a bar exam, licensing exam or certification exam as specified. In addition students may be required to complete further training to be approved for a license. Further, many licensing agencies, do not allow the required testing for people who have not earned a degree in the specific professional degree. Typically, many professional degrees require fairly extensive education, training, and practical experience. Most fields also require professionals to take continuing education courses in order to keep current with one’s field. The requirements may be regulated by state or federal laws, or may be governed by professional organizations. At the doctorate degree level, areas of study include the study of veterinary medicine, medicine, pharmacy, psychology and counseling, and Juris Doctor among other areas of study. With a masters degree areas of study may include social work, physical therapy, nurse practitioner, and counseling. In some professions, some professions you can earn a professional degree at the associate or bachelor degree level, as well as certification programs. Examples include accountants, registered nurses, electricians, mechanics, veterinary technicians, and occupational therapy assistants. All these areas focus on practical skills as opposed to academic research. In many cases, the level of income is higher with a campus on online professional degree.
