Sociology Education and Training

Online sociology degree courses include social theory, sociological research methods, social organization and structure, social stratification and hierarchies, dynamics of social change, family structures, social deviance and control, and applications to the study of specific social groups, social institutions, and social problems. In many sociology programs you may be required to take courses in statistics, as well as research methodology, including phenomenology, case study research, and ethnography. This is based on the fact that so much of social science is based upon watching what people do, collecting the data and then checking it. In addition, there may be a requirement to take courses in group dynamics, psychology, economics, anthropology and other social sciences.

Some sociologists work in prison system, helping design more effective incarceration and rehabilitation methods while others are counselors, educators, or researchers. Others careers in sociology include working in social services. With additional training beyond an online sociology degree, or a masters in social work (MSW), you can get become a social worker.

Expected Salary and Projected Career Growth

The Unites States Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that the median income for sociologists with a campus or online sociology degree in about $60,000. Some federally employed social scientists with a bachelor's degree can start out earning around $36,000 in some positions, while those with a masters degree can earn a starting salary of around $45,000. The median income is about $67,500 annually, with the lowest 10% making about $37,000 and the top 10% earning close to $110,000. Employment prospects are best for those who choose to work in scientific research and development services, where the median salary is closes to $75,000 a year.
