On Monday the United States deployed a surveillance plane over the Korean peninsula, amid concerns about possible provocations in North Korea, after it warned of a “new strategic weapon.”
Aviation tracker Aircraft Spots said that an RC-135W Rivet Joint of the United States Air Force carried out operations over South Korea, the Yonhap news agency said.
Last Wednesday a plane of this type was last deployed on the Korean peninsula, while other surveillance ships, such as the EP-3E and the RC-135S, have carried out operations in the country often in recent weeks.
The last flight took place amid growing concerns about North Korea’s provocative acts before the birthday of its leader Kim Jong-un, which falls on Wednesday.
Pyongyang announced weeks ago that he no longer feels obligated by the self-imposed moratorium on long-range nuclear and missile tests, and warned that the world would witness a new strategic weapon “in the near future”, amid the stagnant dialogues with United States.
Experts contemplate that North Korea may launch an intercontinental ballistic missile capable of carrying multiple nuclear warheads or an underwater launch ballistic missile in the next few days.
